Project Announcement: Rapid Redesign and Manufacturing Methods to Sustain Critical Vehicle Steering Components

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state-of-the-art in digital engineering and advanced manufacturing tools and processes to redesign, test, and produce a new steering gear box prototype as a replacement to the current version of a legacy vehicle.

This initiative will leverage new advances in digital modeling and simulation tools and advanced manufacturing methods to redesign a new steering gear box that has the same form, fit and function as the current version and is able to meet all vehicle performance requirements under operating loads. Special emphasis will be placed on finding common tools and approaches to better assess new designs and manufacturing methods in ways that accelerate development and manufacturing cycles, improve performance, availability, and reliability, and reduce costs for manufacturing and maintenance and sustainment activities.
