Project Announcement: Rapid Material and Process Characterization and Certification System Prototype

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state-of-the-art in automated metals testing and analysis methods and processes. The overall goal is to rapidly develop, assess, and certify advanced materials and advanced manufacturing methods for use in the production, maintenance, and sustainment of surface and subsurface sea vessels.

Specific objectives will include:

  • Leveraging new advances in new alloys, AM technologies and processes, and other emerging metals manufacturing methods, to better understand and assess deformation and damage mechanisms
  • Manufacturing test assets via a variety of different traditional, hybrid, and advanced manufacturing methods with provided base materials and then complete full heat treat and testing characterization for material performance
