Project Announcement: Optimizing Facilities to Ensure Reliability and Maintainability of Large Metal 3D Printers

The U.S. Army is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to evaluate the current state of a facility into which a large-format metal 3D printer will be installed. The project involves preparing to install a scaled-down subsection tool that is part of the large format tool of the US Army’s jointless hull project. This initiative will examine and pilot these installation analysis and planning tools and procedures to determine if they can be applied to installing the large format tool. The intent of this initiative is to evaluate the current state of the facility to which the equipment is to be installed, to understand its capabilities to meet or exceed the requirements for the installation and operation of the subsection tool.
