Project Announcement: Improved Blast Technologies for Corrosion Control in Maintenance and Sustainment Environments

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to identify, test, and demonstrate areas in the U.S Navy’s shipyard operations that can be improved through the use of novel blast technologies. A state-of-the-art technology is needed that monitors and reports the following metrics in real time: 1) abrasive consumption – ferrous and non-ferrous; 2) compressed air consumption and pressure; 3) time blasted per shift by operator.

Specific goals for this initiative include:

  • Working with shipyards and the maintenance community on identifying the key challenges they face in achieving project cost budget and schedule.
  • Identifying what key challenges can be addressed through existing systems/technologies, and what key challenges are feasible to be addressed with this effort.
  • Confirming the data that can be monitored, that will yield the best efficiency gains.
  • Identifying need and developing methods for secure, accurate data transmission which can be accessible in real time by end users in various locations.
