Project Announcement: Autonomous Systems for Maintenance and Sustainment Tasks

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to support the submarine construction industrial base to increase the production of Virginia-class submarines. The primary objective of this effort is to develop a deployable, semi-autonomous platform capable of accelerating industrial production capacity and augmenting the Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) workforce via automation for repair operations.

The desired capabilities of the semi-autonomous system include:

• Metrology, gross and precision material removal through various methods
• Non-destructive evaluation through multiple methods
• Material addition through a variety of methods with a focus on welding
