Project Announcement: Aircraft Launch and Recovery Obsolescence Strategy for Improved Maintenance and Sustainment

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to establish an obsolescence strategy for electronic components and systems supported by a business case that incorporates financial and performance impacts.

The desired obsolescence strategy must be comprehensive and must provide a plan to identify issues and effectively deploy resources that could mitigate critical system risks stemming from the supply base. The overall objective of this initiative is to establish an obsolescence strategy for electronic components and systems supported by a business case that incorporates financial and performance impacts. Specific objectives will include:

• Identifying potential obsolescence issues by subsystem, PCB, and/or component
• Prioritizing electronics for obsolescence risk based on specialization / criticality
• Developing a long-term strategy to address obsolescence

This initiative’s solution must address components / subassemblies with the following obsolescence issues: 1) reactive issues with current or eminent obsolescence, 2) medium-term issues which are predicted or expected to become obsolete prior to next production, and 3) long-term issues predicted to become obsolete for the next design and can be proactively addressees in future designs.
