Project Announcement: Advanced Robotic Processes in Maintenance Environments

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state of modern coating solutions, robotic technologies, and manufacturing processes to provide a more agile and flexible coating solution that eliminates the necessity to place operators in hazardous environments and allows for enhanced repeatability and efficiency without sacrificing the health of the worker.

Specific goals for this initiative include:

  • Establish planning, design layout and production flow of new robotic coatings system using modeling and simulation to optimize the coatings process.
  • Develop and implement the system to recognize and call on different part path programs to automatically call up programs based on what parts are flowing through the coating booth.
  • Develop and implement the equipment operator and maintenance training plan to ensure safe operation and maintenance of the equipment/ system.
  • Conduct a pilot of the robotic coatings system with different components to demonstrate the flexibility of the automated/ robotic equipment.
  • Assess the human interface and benefits of the robotic coating solution versus manual application.
  • Document and implement equipment operator and maintenance tasks and troubleshooting procedures to ensure compliance with all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and applicable standards and regulations.
