Member Spotlight: Ansys

Founded in the U.S. in 1970 as a structural simulation solutions company, Pittsburgh-based Ansys has grown into a world-leading multi-physics simulation company that covers structures, fluids, electromagnetics, aerodynamics, semiconductors, thermal flow, optics, and mission-level aerospace challenges, among others. Ansys’ physics-based simulation solvers are being used in virtually every industry across the world, including aerospace, defense, automotive, additive manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, the Internet of Things, 5G, healthcare, semiconductors, alternative energy, motorsports, materials, construction, chemical processing, and industrial machinery. Simulation accelerates development time while reducing costs and time to market.

Using Ansys simulation solvers, engineers in aerospace & defense are tackling such challenges as electrification and lightweighting of aircraft; automated development of safety-certified code for autonomous flight; reduction of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) times and costs; improvement of antennas for satellite radio frequency communications; increasing cybersecurity in connected vehicles; and acceleration of the Observe, Orient, Decide, Act (OODA) loop, to name just a few.

Engineers throughout the Department of Defense (DOD) and aerospace & defense are implementing Ansys simulation technology to support the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD)’s digital engineering strategy. Whether it is the next generation missile defense system, fighter weapon system, or sustainment of legacy systems well into the future, Ansys is enabling engineers using high fidelity multi-physics modeling & simulation to build and maintain the digital twin/thread that will be required to sustain those systems quickly and efficiently.

To engineer the U.S. military’s next-generation missile defense system, AGI, an Ansys company, is incorporating high-fidelity, multi-physics simulations with multi-domain mission-level modeling into early stages of missile defense system development—effectively enabling warfighters to combat high-speed, highly maneuverable hypersonic weapons in real-time. Physics-based solvers expedite missile defense system development by more accurately predicting communication blackouts, forecasting vehicle trajectory and altitude control, calculating thermal field effects on antenna performance, and analyzing other scenarios.

Physical Optics Corporation (POC) is using Ansys simulation solutions to develop leading-edge avionics for U.S. military aircraft. DOD legacy aircraft equipped with aging avionics and controls require costly upgrades to add new capabilities. As avionics software becomes increasingly sophisticated, complying with complex requirements, satisfying safety-critical standards and reducing costs present major development challenges. Ansys SCADE Solutions for ARINC 661 Applications will enable POC to reduce development time and accelerate certification—integrating new functionality at a much lower cost and enabling a faster path to market.

Ansys technologies can help develop solutions to the greatest challenges facing NCMS partners in aerospace & defense more quickly and with greater confidence than ever before. To learn more, visit www.ansys.com.
