Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning to Improve Supply Chain Management

NCMS Project #: 142193

Problem: Global logistics challenges facing the airline, ship and ground vehicles industries involve a complex operating environment with multiple suppliers and sub-tier suppliers, stove piped Supply Chain Management (SCM) approaches and varied configurations for their respective fleets.  Specifically, the Marine Corps must increase efficiencies and effectiveness by influencing the type, range, and depth of the parts within spares packages to forecast a more accurate mix of high demand parts per aircraft, optimizing the efficiencies of those supply packages.

Benefit: Developing a feasible solution within the dynamic global environment that the Marine Corps operates in will demonstrate to the public what solutions are executable and should be easily transferable to the airline, ship and vehicle industries.

Solution/Approach: The primary objective of this initiative is to develop the strategy and prototype software for a maintenance organization’s use of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, with advanced mathematical algorithms in SCM.  The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) will act as a surrogate for this demonstration.  Efficiencies will be realized by providing recommendations and a roadmap for algorithms using transactional data to forecast a more accurate mix of high demand parts and will provide a resilient SCM strategy.
