Project Announcement: Advanced Tools and Methods to Improve Material Handling Equipment Overhaul – Phase II

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to advance the state of modeling and simulation, advanced engineering, and maintenance methods to refurbish and overhaul a legacy forklift. This initiative seeks to prove out new advanced engineering and manufacturing tools and processes that will result in a full system overhaul that is cost effective, extends equipment useful life, and can be completed safely and easily by maintainers. It will further seek to determine if this new approach can be documented and applied to a wide range of MHE equipment.

Phase II will expand on the success of Phase I and focus on the development of additional prototypes needed for testing. In particular, the team will focus on refining an analysis of candidates for alternative supply chain sources. Continuous process improvement initiatives will focus on maximizing the efficiency of overhaul and manufacturing processes to support a potential future fleetwide overhaul program.
