NCMS Partners with the University of Michigan for Michigan Robotics Day

MIRoboday-timeless

Ann Arbor, MI – The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) is hosting its fifth annual Michigan Robotics Day bringing together on April 9, 2015 at the University of Michigan’s North Campus Research Complex. The University of Michigan’s Department of Engineering has been a partner of the NCMS for this event since 2011, and together the organizations are proud to host this event for the state of Michigan. This year, Ford Motor Company is the exclusive automotive sponsor for the event.

The United States Congress has appointed April 4-12th National Robotics Week to further innovation and education in the field of automated robotics. The ultimate goal of fostering national competitiveness and entrepreneurism in this important engineering and manufacturing space, and Michigan Robotics Day draws top talent, research, and manufacturing for creating relationships, connecting enterprises, and stimulating inspiration.

Michigan Robotics Day brings together the biggest offering of robotics machines, thinkers, students, and manufacturers in the state. From live demonstrations to academia and the private sector, robots that fly, walk, roll, and swim will be illustrating where robotics is at now and where it’s going. Ford will be demonstrating two autonomous vehicles while Pratt & Miller Engineering their autonomous vehicle for defense applications. Michigan State Police will be showcasing their drones, including those for bomb disposal and underwater operations. Finally, both high school robotics teams and those at the college-level will be displaying their projects.

The event offers exciting keynote speeches from two Michigan leaders in the robotics industry; Craig Stevens, Chief Engineer of Controls Research and Advanced Engineering at Ford Motor Company on the importance of STEM Education and the company’s work in autonomous vehicles, and John J. Leonard, Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering and Associate Department Head for Research at MIT on his research developing navigation and mapping for mobile robots. This year’s event also will be attended by special guest Representative Debbie Dingell (D-Dearborn), recently elected to Michigan’s 12th Congressional District in November 2014.

NCMS and the University of Michigan are excited and enthusiastic for this year’s event. Michigan Robotics Day has grown each year, with the last summit reaching an attendance of over 500. This year’s event already claims record attendance with over 650 visitors expected. The participation of the University of Michigan’s School of Engineering echoes the state of Michigan’s desire to encourage more students to pursue STEM fields, while representatives from the industry are given insight into the latest robotics projects and applications from academia.

Michigan Robotics Day brings together new talent, existing industry, and developing research as an exclusive one-day inspirational and professional summit joining ideas, individuals, and organizations for the future of robotics in the state of Michigan and nationwide. Each year we celebrate Michigan’s robotics industry and look to the future, and this year’s event promises to be even better than the last.
