Project Announcement: Lightweighting Material Solutions for Maintenance & Sustainment

The U.S. Army is partnering with industry and academia to develop lightweight components that can be commercialized by leveraging recent breakthroughs in the production of low-cost raw material for carbon fiber. By using representative parts from the transportation industry, this project will demonstrate the feasibility to cost-effectively reduce overall vehicle weight, as well as demonstrate a reduction in maintenance costs while increasing the service life of vehicle components. One specific effort within this objective is to develop technology to use low-cost carbon fiber to produce lightweight composite wheel rims and other components, for use on commercial and military trucks.
