Project Announcement: Thermoplastic Forming of Lightweight Vehicle Structures

The U.S. Army is partnering with industry and academia to demonstrate the benefits of forming thick thermoplastic composite vehicle structures using a low-cost manufacturing process. This project will evaluate the benefits that include:

  • Improved cycle times for induction heating process compared to traditional autoclave heating.
  • Reduced capital equipment and tooling costs due to the lower material consolidation pressures.
  • Reduced fuel consumption due to the development of lightweight vehicle structure prototypes.
