Project Announcement: T700 1st Stage Turbine Nozzle Sand/Salt Phobic Treatment Concept Demonstration – Phase III

A U.S. military partner seeks support to assess the effectiveness of multiple airfoil surface treatments and protective coatings against the initial and continued accumulation of partially molten debris onto the nozzle guide vane of AE1107C turboshaft engines.

Partially molten debris accumulation on high-pressure turbine airfoils is one type of deterioration that occurs within the hot section of an aircraft engine. The accumulation not only degrades performance, but can also increase engine operational line, reducing overall stall margin and safety factors. The U.S. Armed Forces are interested in determining whether the application of a sand-phobic coating on internal components and airfoils can help preserve engine performance and operability over longer periods of operation.
