Project Announcement: Enhanced Environmental Performance for Safety Glass

The goal of this project is to better understand causes of delamination, and alternative coatings and constructs, producing a more robust safety glass for this product that is widely used across many consumer situations such automotive windshields and bulletproof glass.

There are three major aspects to the project:

  • Efforts will be made to correlate the cause of delamination to the appearance of the failure. The impact of storage conditions will also be studied.
  • A second focus will be on new coatings that prevent delamination by improving adhesion or rejecting heat, or improved mar and scratch resistance.
  • The third component is to investigate alternate safety glass constructs, such as with an air gap or laminate that uses the same polymer as the interlayer and spall-layer.
