Manufacturing Demonstration Tool-Set for Maintenance & Sustainment Support for FRC Southeast and FRC Southwest – Phase II

NCMS Project #: 140930

Problem: Organizations rely on their data to make informed decisions. This data is invaluable to management as well as to the technicians, operators, purchasers, and sales force. But in order to utilize the data in an useful way, it needs to be organized, accessible, up-to-date, and reliable. Information that fails in any of those categories is not only useless, it may be a detriment to the organization.

Benefit: Streamlined processes result in quantifiable efficiencies, such as lower levels of inventory, maintenance schedules, supplier information, and equipment reports, that ultimately convert into lower costs of production and lower costs of delivered product or service. Similarly, more accurate manufacturing data increases the insight and knowledge of supply chain and logistics needs, and increases the performance relative to parts ordering (e.g., reduces cost of parts acquisition, including reduction of shipping and expediting fees).

Solution/Approach: Due to the complexity of today’s systems and the digital models used to describe these systems, NAVAIR has focused on stabilizing their Model Based Definition platform with a secure Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) platform. During Phase I of the Manufacturing Demonstration Tool-Set for Maintenance & Sustainment Support the team was able to integrate manufacturing and Engineering by connecting machines directly to the infrastructure at each Fleet Research Center (FRC). Individual Data models, connections to machines and initial integrations to corporate systems have been established and are demonstrable.

Phase II of this project will create a central PLM repository at NAVAIR HQ. This project will add Program Management functionality and capabilities for the Quality Management domain. IDRN will serve as the Digital Thread and interface platform for other disparate corporate systems utilizing a commercial off-the shelf (COTS) integration product/strategy. The system will operate within the DoD network and provide access from consumers from the NMCI network.
