Wireless Communications for Improved Operations and Maintenance

NCMS Project #: 140988

Problem: Wireless technology is changing maintenance and engineering management. Now more than ever, industry workers need instant, trustworthy communications. Despite the benefits, wireless technology comes with challenges. The U.S. Army is facing similar problems within their ground combat systems and maintenance & support community. Developing a feasible solution to these communications issues presented within a large organization such as the U.S. Army will demonstrate to the public what solutions are possible.

Benefit: Tangible benefits of using wireless communications technology include cost reduction, more reliable systems and improved worker safety and productivity. Maintenance workers can now access important data while observing a malfunctioning device or inefficient process and performing repairs or corrective actions. The approach of this initiative will put capabilities into the hands of soldiers in order to get feedback and refine requirements from there. The results are expected to be easily transferable back to commercial industry, positively impacting delivery of products to the public.

Solution/Approach: Efforts will focus on technology transfer of commercially available solutions into a military application, most notably in the area of cybersecurity and data protection. The initiative will assess the capabilities, lifecycle costs, integration burdens, security and maintenance implications of seven (7) commercially-available wireless communication systems for the Army’s maintenance and operations communications issue. The results are expected to be easily transferable back to commercial industry, positively impacting delivery of products to the public.
