Wireless Communications for Improved Operations and Maintenance – Phase II

Problem: The larger an organization or network becomes, the more complex its secure communications needs become. Security, maintenance, in-building communication, multi-campus communication – all of these activities become more challenging as a network expands. The implementation strategy for a wireless communication system must address several major hurdles to deliver benefits to the department and the organization.

Benefit: Efforts will focus on technology transfer of commercially available solutions into a military application, most notably in the area of cybersecurity and data protection. The results are expected to be easily transferable back to commercial industry, positively impacting delivery of products to the public.

Solution/Approach: Phase II of this effort focuses on evaluating the candidate technologies that were initially assessed in a laboratory environment in Phase I with users performing operations in garrison training exercises and maintenance actions that will then be judged on capabilities, ease-of-use, and other requirements developed in Phase I. Phase I resulted in a down-select from 7 candidate solutions to 3. Those 3 systems will undergo rigorous environmental, electromagnetic and user-based capability tests in Phase II.
