NMP-Free Lithium Ion Electrodes for Battery Manufacturing – Phase II

Problem: Phase I of this project focused on the use of advanced cathode binder materials that improve battery performance with reduced cost and environmental impact through the elimination of N-methyl pyrrolidine (NMP).

Benefit: The overall advantages of lithium-ion batteries are longer life expectancy. Lithium-ion technology can double or triple battery service life, reducing risks of downtime or load interruption during maintenance or replacement.

Solution/Approach: In Phase II, work will continue to design cathode coating architectures that deliver a balance of power and energy that is required for batteries to be capable of powering a vehicle over long distances yet also support onboard equipment with a high-power draw.
