NAVAIR Expeditionary Fluid Analysis Capability (EFAC) Evaluation

NCMS Project #: 140872

Problem: Effective fluid analysis can be pivotal to preventive and predictive maintenance programs. Whether the interval to change oil or check equipment fluids is based on calendar days, operating hours, or a combination of measures, a sound fluid analysis program lays the foundation for improving equipment readiness and availability.

Benefit: Early identification of the onset of a mechanical failure reduces maintenance costs by limiting component degradation and effective utilization of labor resources. Additionally, fewer oil changes means a reduction in the storage, transport, and disposal of waste oil benefiting the environment and reducing related costs. Remotely located entities benefit by having a reliable, easy-to-use, in-house capability that provides real-time fluid analysis with minimal operating time lost eliminating the need (and costs) for a mobile laboratory or collecting and shipping samples for analysis.

Solution/Approach: A portable fluid analysis device bridges the gap between future online analysis systems and current laboratory-based analysis paradigms while facilitating a more effective fluid analysis protocol that can significantly impact fluid-related requisition and disposal costs. The objective of this effort is for NAVAIR to evaluate the Spectro Q5800, with technical support from Spectro, to enable a complete evaluation of the Q5800 capabilities as they relate to the Navy Oil Analysis Program (NOAP) requirements, and benchmark the accuracy and repeatability of measurements relative to Navy oil samples on a variety of Navy operational platforms, culminating in a recommendation regarding the fielding of Q5800 unit.
