Light Weighting Material Solutions for Maintenance & Sustainment – Phase II

Problem: Although there has been significant progress made in development of lightweight materials for use in the automotive and trucking industry to improve fleet fuel efficiency, more work is needed to develop solutions that offer increased reliability and durability of key components, such as wheels. Historically, lighter weight wheels suffered from negative trade-offs regarding their cost, life, reliability and durability.  

Benefit: Vehicle light weighting greatly assists OEM automotive, truck and trailer manufacturers in meeting regulatory emission and fuel efficiency requirements.  Moving production of carbon-based raw materials from our international competitors will increase U.S. national security and support a more robust manufacturing-based U.S. economy.  

Solution/Approach: For Phase II, the lessons learned from previous efforts will be applied to develop a new and improved design for a carbon fiber wheel leveraging recent breakthroughs in the production of low-cost raw material for carbon fiber that meets the requirements of at least one dual-use Army/commercial vehicle platform.
