Leveraging Open Systems Software to Improve Vehicle Maintenance and Sustainment

Problem: The enormous cost of integrating, upgrading, and maintaining the features that consumers increasingly expect, including high-end onboard assistants and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), is daunting.  Critical to confronting these challenges is leveraging Open-Source Software (OSS) and Operating Systems (OS) that enable an end-to-end approach to quickly integrate independent software elements into a comprehensive platform, improving functionality and maintainability and reducing complexity and lifecycle costs.

Benefit: The technology developed during this initiative will expand the capabilities of highly secure and safe OSS architecture to achieve more complex code for integration into automotive, aviation, maritime, construction and other fleets of vehicles. 

Solution/Approach: The overarching objective of this initiative is to develop and demonstrate a process that enables vehicle designers and sustainers to architect, sustain and upgrade system functionality over the vehicles lifecycle using open source systems and operating systems.  This objective will be accomplished by demonstrating this developmental process on the Army’s Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) as a surrogate, resulting in a vehicle that is interactive, self-diagnosing, self-reporting weapon system that is consistent with the Army’s future maintenance strategy designated as Prognostic/Predictive Maintenance (PPMx).
