Degradation Prevention for Long-Term Tire Storage Sustainment

NCMS Project #: 140852

Problem: Tire failure after long term storage is a significant cost driver for both the commercial and military market. There is no repair process so tire failure requires replacement, thus increasing the maintenance, logistical, and life cycle costs for commercial and military vehicle service centers.

Benefit: The reduction in maintenance activities and the cost savings from the reduction in new tire purchases, maintenance overhead, and disposal expenses will save both time and money.

Solution/Approach: The objective is to identify the driving force of tire degradation during long-term storage and develop a mitigation solution that shows at least a 50% reduction in degradation compared to the incumbent system in accelerated weathering testing at a laboratory scale.
