Synthetic Hydraulic Lubricating Oil For Naval Submarine & Surface Ship Applications

METSS conducts R&D programs for industry that are synergistic with our commercial interests. METSS is located in Columbus, Ohio. Our 26,000-ft2 facility includes the laboratory and production space needed to support our business operations. METSS provides the expertise, manpower and facilities needed to execute complex research, development, testing, and evaluation programs (RDT&E). We have direct experience scaling product manufacturing and production operations from lab through commercial implementation and operation. Our scientists and engineers have extensive backgrounds in engineering, materials science, and chemistry, with most of our senior staff having advanced technical degrees and a significant amount of practical experience developing products and processes for several different industries. METSS is structured and staffed to provide the best mix of technical talents to conduct successful R&D and to rapidly develop new products and processes to the point of technology transition. We maintain the company’s focus by transitioning technologies developed by METSS to commercial enterprises once they are ready to be integrated into a business focused on commercial implementation. Our core areas include advanced chemistries & materials; environmentally friendly products and processes; materials performance in aggressive environments; and chemical and biological defense. METSS also maintains a Bio-Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory, which is cost effective and well suited for bioaerosol evaluations, climate-controlled measurements, and semi-portable to support field testing.
The US Navy continues to use mineral-based oils (e.g., 2190-TEP) aboard naval ships and submarines despite METSS’ proven synthetic replacement oil (2190-S) being fully adopted aboard five Los Angeles class, nuclear-powered fast attack submarines.
METSS’ 2190-S has been thoroughly vetted and approved by the US Navy and is governed by MIL-DTL-32353A. Our fully synthetic, non-silicone oil is far superior by nearly all metrics compared to its mineral-based counterpart (2190-TEP; MIL-PRF-17331L). METSS maintains two DLA-approved facilities to manufacture enough 2190-S to support the current demand for all classes of submarines to include overhauling Virginia-class, Ohio-class, as well as Columbia-class boats during new construction.
The US Navy began using 2190-TEP as a promising gear oil more than a half century ago; it was never intended to be used in hydraulic systems. METSS’ 2190-S was purposely designed to be 100% compatible with the legacy 2190-TEP but offers significant benefits such as improved hydraulic control valve operation; elimination of excessive carbon buildup (varnish); reduced oxidation; lower moisture content; lower off-gassing/flash point; and improved viscosity index. METSS’ 2190-S is a dual-use product that improves overall performance, reduces maintenance, and increase safety.
