The Ruggedized Sustainment Crawler (RSC) is a variant of a commercially patented crawler developed by International Climbing Machines (ICM). Using Phase II funding from NAVSEA, the vision for RSC was to address ruggedization, defense environments, cybersecurity and operational certification, and compliance requirements. The architecture supports versions that comply with common functions associated with the Family of Sustainment Robotics (FOSR) initiative. While core design changes allow the crawler to operate above and below water, the above-water version is prioritized in product development planning. RSC adheres to surfaces, such as submarine and ship hulls, using vacuum (or suction when underwater) rather than magnetics, allowing it to climb and traverse nonferrous surfaces. The commercial version of the RSC has been successfully tested on many surfaces with a variety of surface imperfections, levels of corrosion, and biofouling. The last step in the evolution as an asset to the DOD is completing development and deploying RSC systems to the field. Significant return on investment (ROI) estimates have been made for a few targeted uses cases. Please share your applications so our team can assess the impact for you.
