AHPDM and the DM SIG- Bill Feiereisen & Debra Goldfarb, Intel
Bill Feiereisen will give an overview of the Alliance for High Performance Digital Manufacturing (AHPDM) where many SIG members are also involved. It was actually during AHPDM discussions that the creation of the DM SIG originated. This discussion will be an opportunity to better understand the roles of AHPDM, the DM SIG and how to best leverage and grow both entities moving forward.

10:30 – 12:00 Digital Manufacturing Events: Annual and Regional
Unify the Community: An Annual “SIG Summit” – Tom Tabor, TCI
Tom Tabor will present for the DM SIG consideration and discuss the concept of a “Unify the Community: SIG Summit.” This NCMS sponsored annual “event” would be for policy makers and stakeholders. The goal being to pull together the many parallel initiatives such as MARC3, NDEMC, SMLC as well as organizations that support education and outreach to the user communities within specific locals (i.e. NCSA, RMSC, OSC, NMCAC, etc.). The objective would be to create an environment to discuss “best practices” and explore avenues for accelerating adoption through communication and collaboration.
Reaching the Missing Middle: AHPDM Tactics – Bill Feiereisen, Intel
Building off of the last item, Bill Feiereisen will present for discussion the numerous regional events under development by AHPDM and other stakeholders (vendors / universities / centers). In particular how an annual event could better enable the AHPDM to execute the Project Chicago’s and HPCC’s they are currently planning.

A “Sign of Goodness” Demonstration – Multimedia, NCMS
Aneesh Chopra (CTO, Obama Administration) asked for a “sign of goodness” by November of this year demonstrating the value and long term viability of M&S for manufacturing competitiveness. NCMS has created a multimedia presentation demonstrating one collaborative NCMS project that leverages the skills and resources of four DM SIG members (L&L Products, Altair Engineering, R Systems and Nimbis Services) to deliver on the Administration’s request. This multimedia video will present the value of M&S, demonstrate newly accessible capabilities and a vision for tomorrow. Following the video Jon Riley will facilitate a discussion of how this information and future efforts could be leveraged to communicate the need to reach the missing middle.
How Exactly Does a PIC Work? – Jon Riley, NCMS
Jon Riley will roll out a more detailed multi-year strategy for PICs. SIG members have asked for more details regarding what actually constitutes a PIC and how organizations can more proactively partner with NCMS on this strategy. While this presentation will be generic in regards to potential location, it will review a more detailed, multi-year strategy which will be presented to three different states this fall.

3D PDF Consortium – David Opsahl, Exec. Dir.
The 3DPDF Consortium is a group of software developers, systems integrators, government agencies and manufacturers that are forming a community around the use of dynamic 3D data contained in PDF files for the purposes of high-value collaboration. The Consortium is not a competing standards entity but rather focuses on fostering adoption through the demonstration of best practices, the frictionless flow of information to and from the standards organizations on the needs of the community, and generating awareness of the power of 3D-enabled PDF to solve a multitude of communication and collaboration challenges. This brief presentation will provide an update on the status of the Consortium, show some examples on how this technology can be and has been employed, and explain how others can become part of the community.

Contributions to K-12 STEM and M&S Education – Behzad Raiszadeh, NASA
There are currently initiatives underway in Virginia at the state level and nationally to write the next generation science standards to include engineering and M&S. NASA Langley is providing subject matter expertise in standards development efforts both in Virginia and nationally. As the new standards find their way into classrooms, NASA is preparing STEM educators to teach engineering and M&S. Mr. Raiszadeh will talk about modeling and simulation training programs, and the instructional material being developed for high school teachers.

Reaching the Missing Middle: Education – Ashok Krishnamurthy, OSC
While the value of M&S is well documented, there remains a distinct disconnect between the acknowledgment of this value and the process of institutions of higher education to help meet the needs of the missing middle. These include the overall lack of knowledge and the mechanism to bridge from short term projects to long term sustainable solutions. Ashok Krishnamurthy of Ohio Supercomputer Center will present the efforts in place and under way at OSC and lead a discussion with questions such as:
- What can the SIG do to help with trial programs and best practices?
- What educational programs or materials do large OEMs / ISVs have internally?
- Does the National Science Foundation (NSF) provide a viable funding opportunity?

Advanced Manufacturing Partnership Update – Rick Jarman, NCMS
Rick Jarman will give a brief update regarding the President’s call for a national effort to support the creation of good jobs by helping U.S. manufacturers reduce costs, improve quality, and accelerate product development. The AMP is guided by a Steering Committee, which operates within the framework of PCAST and is comprised of leading experts from industry and academia. Recent activities attended by NCMS, future meetings and means for you to become involved will be discussed.

Manufacturing Panel – Jon Riley, Facilitator
Representing manufacturers from all sizes Accio Energy (9 employees), L&L Products (400 employees), MAG (3500 employees), GE (300,000+ employees) will discuss and answer questions about their challenges and interests related to M&S.
Micro Projects: Accio Energy - Dawn White
Accio Energy is developing a non-turbine based stationary, modular wind energy technology based on electrohydrodynamic principles. Developing a predictive simulation of this system to accelerate product development requires extensive computational resources. Dawn White will be giving a brief overview of her company along with the challenges & opportunities ahead regarding M&S. Jon Riley will then facilitate a discussion overviewing a potential collaborative effort to address at least one of the challenges / opportunities presented.
Macro Projects: GE AMTC - Doug Dinon
GE is in the process of standing up a new Advanced Manufacturing Technical Center Platform in SE Michigan. Partnerships will be key in creating new Manufacturing Technology Opportunities. GE is partnering with NCMS to leverage this new Platform to find synergies for technology development to scale up for commercial production.
