Ultra-Lightweight Sandwich Composite Constructions
For Autobody Applications: A Predictive Simulation Approach
Wayne State University (WSU) and MAG 1AS, LLC (MAG) together with Nimbis Services, INC (NSI) jointly propose the following project to develop predictive computer simulation tools that enable application of new ultra-lightweight sandwich composite structures; for example, vehicle floor pans or vehicle hoods.
The proposed “design-through-simulation” project builds upon the current foundational work. The most promising fiber/resin/core chemistry and sandwich configurations will be down-selected for further consideration in specific vehicle component structures, such as the floor pan or automotive hood. The predictive simulation tools will utilize a minimum set of critical information to predict the structural response and crash performance of floor pan geometries under dynamic loads. The goal is to develop a robust simulation tool that verifies the design for sub-component geometries so that confidence in the predictive simulation tools can be gained.
