February 11, 2013. California, Florida and Nevada have already passed similar measures to support local innovators. This effort is a bid to publicize innovative Michigan-based companies who require more than their limited road testing. Manufactures have been discretely testing autonomous vehicles on Michigan roads for years, and this new legislation would establish guidelines and open the market for small and medium sized companies to begin creating new autonomous vehicle technology.

Dr. Sridahar Kota, formerly of the White House Office of Science and Technology will be one of the plenary speakers. Additional speakers include Kurt Peterson, from KP MEMS, who is a microsensor pioneer and current venture capitalist; and Avram Bar-Cohen, a Program Manager at the Microsystem Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

January 24, 2013. Last week, the Obama Administration held a workshop entitled “Blueprint for Action: Design of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI)” at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration in Huntsville, Alabama. This heavily attended workshop included representatives from government, academia and industry – all convening to collaborate around the design of the proposed NNMI public-private partnership program.
January 22, 2013. Last fall the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) announced that it had partnered with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to establish the first innovation center in what will become a national grid. The centers help will small- and mid-sized manufacturers (SMMs) be more competitive globally by providing them with a virtualized approach to product design and manufacturing that combines high performance modeling, simulation, and analysis (MS&A), data mining tools, and the digitization of processes to optimize speed, reliability, and efficiency.
January 17, 2013. Last night Michigan’s Governor, Rick Snyder announced his support for autonomous vehicle licensing in the state. NCMS has been working with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to help the Midwest seize the lead in the development and deployment of robotic and autonomous vehicle technology.
