SM SIG Meeting Date Finalized, Sign Up Now!

NCMS is pleased to announce the next Sustainable Manufacturing SIG will be March 5th at the General Dynamics – Ordnance and Tactical Systems Munition Services facility located in Joplin, MO. The GD-OTS MS facility is the largest commercial disposer of explosive materials and devices in the U.S. It has been providing explosive waste disposal services for the defense and commercial explosives industry, automotive industry, oil well servicing industry, and other local, state and U.S. government agencies (e.g., law enforcement) since 1995. This is an excellent opportunity to see a facility that actually works within the end of life phase of manufactured products.

In addition to a tour of the GD-OTS MS facility and hearing about their sustainability initiatives, invited guests include Andrea Thomas, Senior Vice President, Sustainability, Walmart and Jim Fava, Vice President, PE International. Andrea Thomas sits on The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) Board of Directors, the non-for-profit organization formed and originally funded by Walmart, whose members now include many of the world’s largest consumer packaged goods companies. Andrea is expected to give great insights as to the Walmart approach to promote sustainability throughout its supply chain. Jim Fava will discuss in some detail PE International’s suite of GaBi sustainability tools and how they are supporting sustainability initiatives worldwide.

About GD-OTS MS — GD-OTS MS has improved the decommissioning processes of munitions to improve recyclability to over 97% from virtually 0% (landfill). The heart of their explosive waste disposal services is a Rotary Kiln Incinerator (RKI). The RKI is the only commercial hazardous waste incinerator in the U.S. that is specifically designed for the incineration of explosive materials and devices. Like all hazardous waste incinerators in the U.S., GD-OTS MS’ permitted hazardous waste incinerators are highly controlled and regulated such that the emissions from disposal of explosive wastes are cleaned of harmful chemicals, particulates, and heavy metals.

About Andrea Thomas — Andrea Thomas sits on The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) Board of Directors, the non-for-profit organization formed and originally funded by Walmart, whose members now include many of the world’s largest consumer packaged goods companies. TSC’s mission is to develop and promote science and integrated tools so that together they can improve informed decision making for product sustainability throughout the entire product lifecycle across all relevant consumer goods sectors. Andrea is expected to give great insights as to the Walmart approach to promote sustainability throughout its supply chain.

About Jim Fava — Jim Fava will discuss in some detail PE International’s suite of GaBi sustainability tools and how they are supporting sustainability initiatives worldwide. GaBi is recognized and used globally by many leading automotive and manufacturing companies as the tool of choice for measuring product impact on sustainability metrics for the environment, economy and social justice. Included will be a case study of how the German automotive industry uses GaBi to assess their products through their entire life cycle.
