Jon Riley, Executive Director of Design & Engineering Programs, will give a presentation on the potential demand for HPC from small and medium sized manufacturing companies.
Jon is leading the NCMS effort to implement a practical national strategy for making HPC tools available for U.S. Manufacturers.
April 8, 2011 (9:00 AM to 2:00 PM CST)
Omni Houston Galleria Hotel, Houston, Texas
Co-located with the HPC User Forum (April 5-7, www.hpcuserforum.com).
Studies have shown that using high-performance computing (HPC) to accelerate modeling and simulation can provide a significant competitive advantage for manufacturing companies. Today, most industry usage of HPC is done by the largest companies, either in-house or in collaboration with leadership-class HPC centers. Unfortunately for most small and medium sized companies, using HPC in-house is not an option because they lack the resources and specialized IT skills. While many of the regional HPC centers across the U.S. have the computing cycles and IT capabilities available to support small and medium sized industrial users, few centers do so.
This workshop will bring together representatives of regional HPC centers and other interested parties to discuss better support for small and medium sized industrial users. The expected outcome is a report which captures what industrial usage models have worked successfully for HPC centers, what obstacles exist that prevent more widespread industrial engagement across centers, and what is required to overcome these obstacles. We expect this to be the first of a series of workshops over the coming months, with future workshops dealing with topics such as HPC software licenses and industrial science challenge problems.
