Technology Showcase Update- FRC East- Cherry Point, NC

Please plan to participate in the third Technology Showcase to be held April 28-29, 2010.

This is an exclusive opportunity for NCMS members to display technologies for managers, engineers, and artisans at the Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) East Maintenance Center in Cherry Point, North Carolina. The first day of the event will be for technology displays followed by a day of follow-up meetings with FRC personnel on potential applications.

FRC East is currently interested in the following technologies:

NCMS Director Dr. Thomas Kurfess Honored by SME

Congratulations to NCMS Director Dr. Thomas Kurfess who has been recognized with the SME Education Award. Renowned as one of the world's leading experts in the field of microscale manufacturing metrology, with research focused on the design and development of high-precision manufacturing and metrology systems, Kurfess began his career in academia at Carnegie Mellon University in 1988, where he rose to the rank of associate professor. 

Dr. Kurfess joined the NCMS Board of Directors which expanded as part of a long-term commitment to keeping the U.S. in a leadership position in global manufacturing.

2010 RTC Annual Meeting

The next Annual RTC Membership Meeting has been scheduled for March 16, 2010 from 1-5 PM EDT in Miami, FL. This meeting is being held in conjunction with the NDIA 2010 Ground Robotics Capability Conference & Exhibition which will kick-off with an opening reception at 5:00 – 6:30 PM immediately following our meeting.  The NDIA conference will continue until 1:30 PM on Thursday, March 18, 2010. 
 
RTC members must register by close of business March 5, 2010.

Mr. Walker will be sharing insight into DoE's "Save Energy Now" program, an initiative aimed at saving 25% "energy intensity" in 10 years.

Mr. Dolle will discuss GE Aviation's plan to expand their use of the MTConnect standard and the benefits that the company has seen from its MTConnect pilot program. In this pilot program, the company has been able to remotely identify equipment problems and associate those problems to cycle time and product cost. GE Aviation's pilot program has expanded to evaluate the use of the standard in improving production efficiency and machine utilization.

NCMS West Welcomes New Interns

Chris Stone is a Mechanical Engineering Technology student at Old Dominion University's Bremerton campus where he successfully designed; built, programmed an advanced computer controlled underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) capable of undersea exploration and survey for his senior design project.

Chris has a diverse background including a previous degree in Geography with a minor in Geology. He has worked in the ocean survey industry including participating in the completion of several large telecom cable project surveys.  He holds a private pilot license and plans to pursue a career in engineering working with the government sector.  

While in the internship program at NCMS, Chris is working to achieve a better understanding of engineering technologies and their role in providing solutions to government and commercial agency challenges.

Victoria Walker is a senior at Klahowya High School and also attends Olympic College part time where she made the Dean’s List.  When not in school or interning, she performs with the Klahowya Eagles Marching Band and Pep Band, holding the prestigious position of Flute Section Leader.  She has also earned awards for outstanding achievement in Math, Science, English, History, and Band and recently received the award for being the Most Inspirational Student in Band along with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. 

Her goal is to work with the staff at NCMS to acquire first-hand learning experience of industry.
