2008 CTMA Symposium Celebrates Successful Collaborations

Commercial Technologies for Maintenance Activities (CTMA) - a collaborative initiative teaming NCMS, its member companies and the Department of Defense (DoD) - held its 9th annual symposium April 7-9, 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland. The CTMA program, administered by the NCMS, is a unique DoD/Industry partnership designed to bring new technologies to the DoD maintenance community to increase warfighter readiness through increased weapon system reliability, improved maintenance procedures, and reduce costs.

The event was marked by the enthusiasm of satisfied CTMA customers whose most pressing maintenance needs had been solved through collaboration with NCMS. Some estimates place the overall value of the work delivered by CTMA at over $1 billion dollars from a DoD investment of $53 million. But most importantly, overall equipment readiness has improved drastically while maintainers have had direct input into the development of much needed equipment.

Project Final Report: Process Substitution Methodology for the Repair of Composite Materials

The Process Substitution Methodology project for composite materials provided immediate benefit to the Department of Defense (DoD) war fighting capability during missions in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq.

The primary goal of this project was to develop and install the basic tools required to support material state management approach upon which the substitution methodology is based. The rapid revision of the processes that allowed for expansion of the Predator mission is just one example of potential applications. The material state management approach provides production personnel and support engineers with visibility on the effects of changes in process of the composite.

Cost:

$150.00 Non-members
$100.00 NCMS Member

NCMS/CTMA Emerging Project: Enhanced Wiring Integrity System Phase II

Project Category: Condition and Prognosis Based Maintenance.

Phase I of the Electrical Wiring Integrity Systems Program (EWIS) demonstrated the potential that can be realized by effective wire testing and maintenance. The EWIS results have resulted in success at each of the participant sites. However, as the expeditionary demand on military aircraft increases and the life cycle of these aircraft are extended, the need to effectively implement wiring integrity programs to maintain the health of these aircraft also increases. Quick identification of faulty wire paths and in locating the fault will provide improved repair time and increased mission readiness.

Phase II of this program will focus on moving aircraft maintenance from a reactive to a proactive posture. This transition will be accomplished by providing aircraft maintainers with the necessary inspection test protocols and processes to implement the EWIS technology effectively into a Phased Depot Maintenance environment. Establishing an effective wiring health monitoring and maintenance program for military aircraft will provide a viable insight into the degradation of aircraft wiring.

Current industry participants are Eclypse International, Boeing, and Aging Aircraft Consultants, Inc.
