Project Final Report: Process Substitution Methodology for the Repair of Composite Materials

The Process Substitution Methodology project for composite materials provided immediate benefit to the Department of Defense (DoD) war fighting capability during missions in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq.

The primary goal of this project was to develop and install the basic tools required to support material state management approach upon which the substitution methodology is based. The rapid revision of the processes that allowed for expansion of the Predator mission is just one example of potential applications. The material state management approach provides production personnel and support engineers with visibility on the effects of changes in process of the composite.

CTMA Projects Near Completion

Two CTMA projects, Smart Machines Pilot Project (SMPP) Phase II and OptiCAM, are near completion and will soon enter the Final Report creation stage.

Final reports should be available mid year 2008.

SMPP piloted the use of real time condition monitoring data gathering and analysis with online presentation of shop status information. An obvious precursor is the existence of a shop floor network capable of real time performance, a rarity in the defense depot environment which emerged as one of the key issues. The project approach was to deploy the Freedom eLog product from Cincinnati Machine that gathers data from control systems or from add-on sensors, processes raw data to extract information, and delivers results to users via web services. Freedom eLog was installed at eight pilot locations, with monitored equipment ranging from modern machine tools with sophisticated controls to heat treat systems using PLC controls to legacy equipment that lacked any sort of formal control system. The various pilots enabled recipients to monitor equipment utilization, identify problem equipment, and reduce time wasted by process inefficiencies. Progress toward implementation of CBM is planned for later phases.

OptiCAM piloted a complete reverse engineering process, including 3D part scan by Spatial Integrated Systems’ VZX scanner, creation of a surface model from scan data using Siemens’ Imageware, creation of a 3D solid model from the surface model using Siemens’ NX CAD, process workflow control and data management in Siemens Teamcenter PLM, engineering collaboration support using Siemens’ Teamcenter Community, and creation of manufacturing documentation in Siemens NX CAD/CAM. The prototype system has been demonstrated extensively to defense depots.

NCMS, Focus: Hope, and Immersive Engineering to produce Machinist Training Program

ANN ARBOR, MI – February 13, 2008. The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) has formed a three-way partnership with Focus: HOPE of Detroit, MI and Immersive Engineering, Inc. of Bloomfield, MI to produce and distribute online training to enhance the skills of student machinists entering the U.S. metalworking industry.

“Lifelong training to raise the skill level of our workforce is essential in today’s competitive global economy. This collaborative program delivers innovative technology and tools to advance our mission to help our workers,” said Rick Jarman, NCMS President & CEO.

“NCMS has forged an important partnership to help create a skilled workforce for Michigan,” said Congressman Joe Knollenberg R-MI. “These kinds of partnerships are vital to insuring that Michigan remains attractive to manufacturing companies who are looking for the right place to invest.”

Initial training courses will cover basic industrial lathes and CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine axes orientation, followed by mills and grinders. The curriculum will supplement an extensive CNC controller simulation program currently offered by Immersive Engineering.

“This strategic partnership enables our organizations to leverage the strengths to deliver additional high-quality manufacturing and machining online training products,” said Chris Bien, President, Immersive Engineering. “As a result, our customers will benefit from having access to a broader selection of courses at affordable prices.”

The basis for the initial lathe training is a series of modules developed and produced by NCMS for the Focus: HOPE Machinist Training Institute through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The curriculum, designed by Focus: HOPE, supplements their successful hands-on training and shop floor exercises. Students can now work through their computers on virtual simulations that will help them understand basic machining concepts and test their understanding of machining processes.

The partnership of these three companies allows this very effective computer-based training to be deployed across the country through Immersive Engineering’s LCMS (Learning Content Management System), which allows access by educational institutions and metalworking shops large and small.

“It is a win-win situation for the metalworking industry in dire need of qualified machinists to replace the aging workforce and our young student population needing good paying, challenging careers in manufacturing,” said Tim Duperron, acting CEO of Focus: HOPE.

The first phase of the training will launch later in the first quarter of 2008. The partnership will develop additional training as funding becomes available.
